6 things to prepare before starting a new website

Goals, content, access and decision makers: what to clarify before the first meeting.

A website project's pace is often shaped by uncertainty at the start rather than design or code. These six points make the first meeting much more productive.

1. Your site's purpose in one sentence

What should have changed three months after launch? More enquiries, fewer phone calls or a stronger brand presence? A one-sentence goal guides all the decisions that follow.

2. Your audience and primary action

Write down who will visit the site and what you want them to do. The primary action is usually measurable: completing a form, making a purchase or booking an appointment.

3. An inventory of existing content

Where are your texts, photos, documents and videos? Which need updating? Content preparation is one of the biggest factors affecting the schedule.

4. Access details

  • The account where your domain is registered
  • Access to your existing hosting or server
  • Email and DNS management
  • Analytics and search console accounts, if any

5. Decision makers and approvals

Who approves design and content? A clear approval chain shortens feedback cycles and keeps sprints on schedule.

6. Budget range and constraints

Even a rough budget range helps prioritize scope realistically. Share fixed constraints, such as a launch date, from the start.
